What actually matters for a Shopify heatmap
The heatmap itself is a commodity now. Every tool here draws click and scroll maps. What separates them on Shopify is less visible.
- The kind of map. Click (or tap) maps show what people press. Scroll maps show how far they get. Move maps follow the cursor, which only exists on desktop, so they say little about phone traffic. Revenue or conversion maps tie an area of the page to purchases, and that's the one that tells you what to fix first.
- The checkout. Shopify sandboxes tracking scripts, and a sandboxed pixel can't capture "page scrolling" or "clicks and mouse movement to create heatmaps" (Shopify Help). Heatmap apps get around this with Shopify's Advanced DOM Events, which are reserved for approved heatmap and recording apps and "limited on checkout to stores on the Shopify Plus plan" (shopify.dev). So unless you're on Plus, expect checkout events (started, completed) rather than a heatmap of the checkout pages.
- Caps and sampling. Free tools limit something. Clarity records up to 100,000 sessions per project a day and builds each heatmap from up to 100,000 page views (Microsoft Learn). Contentsquare captures replays for 5% of sessions on Free and 15% on Growth (pricing). Crazy Egg counts pageviews, not sessions, and limits the number of heatmap reports.
- Price per session. Most paid apps charge by session band, so the same traffic costs very different amounts. The table below prices 10,000 sessions a month.
What 10,000 sessions a month costs
| Tool | Plan that covers it | Monthly price |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Clarity | Free | $0 |
| MIDA | Growth (15,000 sessions) | $24.90 |
| Contentsquare (Shopify app) | Growth 10k | $69 |
| Lucky Orange (Shopify app) | Grow (10,000 sessions) | $89 |
| Crazy Egg | Plus (150,000 pageviews), billed yearly | $99 |
| Heatmap.com | Launch, priced on revenue up to $10M | $199 |
| Anry | One plan, priced by traffic | Paid, see pricing |

Crazy Egg's Starter stops at 5,000 pageviews, fewer than 10,000 sessions produce, so Plus is the first plan that fits.
The 7 best heatmap tools for Shopify
1. Anry: for putting a price on what the heatmap shows
Anry has session replays, and it can generate a visual heatmap for a page, so you can look at the map and then watch the visits behind it. Your agent gets the same page as numbers through get_heatmap_summary, one of its 16 read-only MCP tools: click and scroll aggregates for a page, split by device (MCP docs). It reads how deep people scroll and which elements take the clicks, in Claude, Claude Code or Cursor.
The reason to pick it over the other six is what sits around the map. A scroll map on its own can't say which ad sent those scrollers or what the leak costs in your orders. Anry pins each paid visit to the Meta or Google click that started it and to the order, if there was one, then marks the pages, devices and ads where paying visitors drop off and costs each one from your own order history. Code does the detecting and the pricing, the same way every time, with no AI judgement in it. A language model writes the summary and a proposed fix, and that goes to your own agent ("Ask Anry").
Here's what a summary tells you, from anry.io's own home page on desktop, 12 to 20 October, 75 sessions. Half the visitors stopped before 1,900px of a 6,700px page, and a quarter got past 4,200px. Of 33 elements clicked, 5 drew high click intensity and 19 low. So the bottom third is seen by under a quarter of visitors, and clicks bunch up on a few elements. What a summary like this can't tell you on its own is which ad sent those visitors, or what they cost. That's the part Anry adds, and it decides whether you rewrite the page or change the ad.
- Best for: stores on Meta or Google ads (Shopify first, WooCommerce and PrestaShop too) that want a cost on each cold zone and to know whether the ad caused it.
- Price: paid, so it costs more than Clarity's free maps. There's one plan, it includes every feature and it's billed monthly; the free trial doesn't ask for a card (pricing).
- The catch: it reads Meta and Google ads only, and there are no surveys, A/B tests or chat widgets. If all you want is a map, Clarity's is free.
2. Microsoft Clarity: the free default, installed from the App Store
Clarity's Shopify app is free and rated 4.6 from 2,396 reviews (Shopify App Store). It draws click, scroll, attention and area maps, and conversion maps, which show the share of sessions that bought after clicking an area, once Clarity detects purchase events (Microsoft Learn). Microsoft says the app follows the checkout through the Shopify Pixel and shows heatmaps for post-purchase pages (Clarity blog).
- Best for: every store. Install it first.
- Price: free, with no sampling and no traffic limit.
- The catch: recordings are kept 30 days, heatmap data 9 months (Microsoft Learn). Scroll maps only work on the page body and pages up to 65,535 pixels tall, and menus that open on hover don't show (Microsoft Learn). If you're weighing it against paid tools, we compared that in Microsoft Clarity alternatives.
3. Heatmap.com: revenue on every click
Heatmap.com is built for ecommerce. It claims "revenue attribution per pixel" and "100% traffic coverage", and keeps data forever on every plan (pricing). It installs on Shopify with an app or an 8kb script (Heatmap.com), and connects to Facebook, Google, TikTok and X ads to split behavior by campaign (help center).
- Best for: larger stores that want dollars drawn on the page.
- Price: Launch $199 a month up to $10M in revenue, Growth $349, Scale $699, up to 32% off yearly. 14-day trial.
- The catch: priced on revenue, so a small store pays $199 for the same tool a $9M store gets. MCP and API access need Scale. If that's why you're looking, see Heatmap.com alternatives.
4. Lucky Orange: checkout heatmaps for Plus stores
Lucky Orange's draw on Shopify is the checkout. Since May 2024, Plus stores can use its heatmaps and recordings on checkout pages (Lucky Orange). The app also has funnels, surveys and checkout analytics, rated 4.6 from 898 reviews (Shopify App Store).
- Best for: Shopify Plus stores that want to see the checkout itself.
- Price: free for 100 sessions a month, then Launch $19 (500 sessions), Build $39 (3,500) and Grow $89 (10,000) in the app. Bigger plans on its site go to Scale at $839 a month billed yearly for 300,000 sessions (pricing).
- The catch: the small plans are pricey per session: Launch is $19 for 500. We found no MCP. Already on it and outgrowing it: Lucky Orange alternatives.
5. MIDA: the cheapest paid sessions
MIDA is a Shopify-only app rated 4.9 from 611 reviews (Shopify App Store). Heatmaps are unlimited from the free plan. Revenue click tracking and conversion heatmaps start on Growth.
- Best for: small and mid-size stores that want revenue clicks without paying Heatmap.com prices.
- Price: free for 250 sessions a month. Basic $9.90 (5,000 sessions), Growth $24.90 (15,000), Enterprise $44.90 (40,000) with API export and an MCP integration.
- The catch: its AI assistant costs extra. And as with every app here, checkout heatmaps depend on Shopify's Plus rule.
6. Contentsquare: Hotjar's heatmaps, now as a Shopify app
Hotjar no longer takes new sign-ups (Contentsquare), so this is where Hotjar's heatmaps live now (the full story is in Hotjar alternatives). Contentsquare launched its own Shopify app in December 2025 and lists checkout among what it works with (Shopify App Store).
- Best for: teams that want heatmaps, replays and surveys from one vendor, and zone-based heatmaps that score whole sections of a page.
- Price: in the Shopify app, free up to 20k sessions a month, then Growth from $49 a month for 7k sessions, $69 for 10k and $409 for 100k. Bought directly, the free plan goes to 200k sessions and Growth starts at $39 a month billed yearly (pricing).
- The catch: zone-based heatmaps need Growth, and replays are sampled below Pro. The app had no reviews yet when we checked.
7. Crazy Egg: the most report types
Crazy Egg's five snapshot reports (heatmap, scrollmap, confetti, overlay and list) slice the same clicks in different ways (Crazy Egg).
- Best for: marketers who like several views of one page and run their own A/B tests.
- Price: Starter $29 a month (5,000 pageviews, 50 recordings, 5 heatmap reports), Plus $99, Pro $249, Enterprise $599. "All plans are billed annually" (pricing).
- The catch: yearly billing only. Its MCP "can do anything that account can do", so Crazy Egg suggests connecting a limited user (Crazy Egg support).
When Microsoft Clarity is still the better choice
- You're on Basic, Grow or Advanced. Shopify only opens checkout heatmaps to Plus stores, so the main extra that paid apps sell on Shopify doesn't apply to you.
- You look at a few pages a month. Clarity's maps on the product page, the collection page and the cart answer most layout questions for free.
- Your traffic is mostly organic. Revenue per element matters most when you're paying for each visit.
How to choose
- Starting out: Clarity. Free, one-click app, no sampling.
- Under 15,000 sessions a month and you want revenue on the map: MIDA Growth at $24.90.
- Shopify Plus, checkout is the problem: Lucky Orange or Contentsquare, which both list checkout support.
- Large store, budget for it: Heatmap.com, for revenue per element across the whole site.
- Paid traffic that isn't converting: Anry, to price the leak, see if the ad caused it and watch the sessions behind it. The CRO tools for Shopify post covers what to use after that, to test the fix.
Where Anry fits
A heatmap shows you a cold zone, and Anry can draw that map too. What it adds is what the zone costs in your own orders and whether the visitors were the wrong people to begin with, then it gives the fix to your agent. If your traffic is organic or you only need to settle a layout question, Clarity's free map will do and you don't need Anry.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free heatmap app for Shopify?
Microsoft Clarity. It's free on the Shopify App Store, has no traffic limit and no sampling, and covers click, scroll, attention and conversion maps. MIDA and Lucky Orange also have free plans, capped at 250 and 100 sessions a month.
Can heatmap tools track the Shopify checkout?
Only on Shopify Plus. Heatmap apps need Shopify's Advanced DOM Events, which Shopify limits on checkout to Plus stores and approved heatmap or recording apps. On other plans you see checkout events, not a checkout heatmap.
What's the difference between a click map and a scroll map?
A click map shows where people click or tap. A scroll map shows how far down the page they get. On a long product page, check the scroll map first: a button nobody reaches gets no clicks however good it is.
Why did my Shopify heatmap stop collecting data?
Usually a theme change. Microsoft warns that "design changes might cause the Clarity script to be removed", and the same goes for any script installed in the theme. Reinstall it and check that new sessions arrive.
Which Shopify heatmap tools work with Claude?
Anry, Clarity and Contentsquare include an MCP from their entry or free plans. Crazy Egg has one too, without saying which plans get it. MIDA includes one on Enterprise and Heatmap.com on Scale. We couldn't find one for Lucky Orange.
