Why people look for Hotjar alternatives

Hotjar was the default heatmap tool for years. In 2026 there are four reasons people go looking, and only the last one is about the product.

  • You can't sign up anymore. "It's no longer possible to create a new account on Hotjar," says Contentsquare's own Hotjar page. New users are sent to Contentsquare instead (Contentsquare). Hotjar merged into the Contentsquare group on 1 July 2025 (Hotjar help).
  • Existing accounts are being moved. Hotjar customers get a 30-day notice, then their plan switches to Contentsquare Growth unless the account owner opts out. The Hotjar account goes read-only for 90 days, and after that the Hotjar data is deleted (Contentsquare). If you're being moved anyway, it's a natural moment to compare.
  • The free plan only keeps a month. Contentsquare's free plan covers 200k sessions a month but gives 1 month of data access. Growth starts at $39 a month billed yearly for 7k sessions, with 13 months of data (Contentsquare pricing).

And then the product reason. Heatmaps and recordings show you what people did on a page. They don't tell you which ad brought them, or how much the page is costing you. For a Shopify store that buys most of its traffic, that's the part that decides what to fix first.

The 7 best Hotjar alternatives for Shopify

1. Anry: for when you need to know which ad sends the visitors who leave

Anry isn't a heatmap tool, so let me be clear about what it does. It follows every ad click to the visit and the order. It finds where money leaks (a page, a device, an ad sending the wrong people) and puts a price on each leak, counted in your store's own orders rather than in what Meta or Google report. It's a read-only MCP with 16 tools, so you ask in Claude, Claude Code or Cursor, and your agent gets the fix ("Ask Anry"). Anry never changes your store itself.

Here's what that looks like in practice. We ran a Meta campaign for anry.io optimised for landing page views. Meta reported A$122.03 spent, 498 link clicks and 460 landing page views at A$0.27 each. Anry showed that about 98% of those visits never scrolled or tapped anything, and nearly all came from Instagram Reels and Stories placements. Mistaken taps, basically. A recording tool would have given me hundreds of empty sessions to watch. Anry put them next to the ad and the placements that paid for them, so I knew the fix was in Ads Manager and not on the page. We paused it the same day.

  • Best for: Shopify, WooCommerce and PrestaShop stores running Meta or Google ads that want to know whether the ad or the page is losing the sale.
  • Price: $99 a month up to 25K sessions, one plan with every feature, billed monthly. 14-day free trial, no card (pricing).
  • The catch: no replay player and no click maps to scroll through. If you want to watch sessions, pair it with Clarity, which is free.

2. Microsoft Clarity: the free default

Clarity gives you heatmaps and session recordings for free, with "no traffic limits" (Clarity). Microsoft publishes an official MCP server with three tools: query the dashboard, list recordings and search the docs (GitHub).

  • Best for: any store that wants to watch real sessions without paying.
  • Price: free.
  • The catch: recordings are kept 30 days and heatmap data 9 months (Microsoft Learn). The data export API behind the MCP allows 10 requests per project a day (Microsoft Learn). No revenue and no ad spend.

3. Contentsquare: Hotjar's successor, if you want to stay

This is where Hotjar went. Every plan includes session replays, heatmaps, funnels and surveys. It has an official remote MCP at https://api.contentsquare.com/mcp with OAuth (mcpservers.org), and the pricing page caps tool calls per plan.

  • Best for: teams that liked Hotjar's mix of replays and surveys and want to keep it.
  • Price: free for 200k sessions a month with 1 month of data. Growth is $39 a month billed yearly or $49 monthly, from 7k sessions, with 13 months of data. Pro and Enterprise are custom (pricing).
  • The catch: MCP calls are capped at 300 a month on Free and 36k a year on Growth. Bigger survey volumes are priced separately as Voice of Customer, free up to 100 responses a month. No ad spend.

4. Lucky Orange: the Shopify all-in-one

Lucky Orange bundles recordings, heatmaps, funnels, form analytics, surveys and live chat in one Shopify app, rated 4.6 from 901 reviews (Shopify App Store).

  • Best for: small stores that want every behaviour tool in one cheap app.
  • Price: on the Shopify App Store, free for 100 sessions a month, then Launch $19 (500 sessions), Build $39 (3,500) and Grow $89 (10,000), with 20% off yearly. Its AI feature is an add-on there, from $5 a month. Bigger plans go up to Scale at $839 a month billed yearly for 300k sessions (Lucky Orange pricing).
  • The catch: tight session caps on the low plans, and we couldn't find an MCP.

5. Heatmap.com: heatmaps with revenue per element

Heatmap.com ties clicks and scrolls to revenue, so you see which parts of a page earn money. It's the closest of these to Anry's question, from the page side.

  • Best for: larger stores that want revenue on the heatmap itself.
  • Price: Launch $199 a month for stores up to $10M in revenue, Growth $349, Scale $699, up to 32% off with annual prepay. 14-day trial (Heatmap.com pricing).
  • The catch: MCP and API access are "Not included" until Scale at $699. It doesn't read your ad spend.

6. Mouseflow: funnels and form analytics

Mouseflow covers recordings, heatmaps, funnels and form analytics, with an AI assistant called Mina on paid plans (Mouseflow pricing).

  • Best for: stores that care about where people drop in a form or a funnel.
  • Price: free for 500 sessions a month, then Essential $25 (5,000 sessions), Advanced $109 (25,000) and Premium $319 (100,000), up to 35% off yearly. 14-day trial with no card.
  • The catch: the MCP and API come with Premium at $319 a month (Mouseflow MCP). Retention runs from 1 month on Free to 12 months on Premium.

7. Crazy Egg: simple heatmaps on a small budget

Crazy Egg does heatmaps, recordings and surveys, plus A/B tests from the Plus plan. Its MCP works in Claude, Cursor and ChatGPT (Crazy Egg help).

  • Best for: small stores that mainly want click maps.
  • Price: Starter $29 a month (5,000 pageviews, 50 recordings), Plus $99, Pro $249, Enterprise $599, all billed yearly with a free trial (Crazy Egg pricing).
  • The catch: 50 recordings a month on Starter is very few. And the MCP "can do anything that account can do", so Crazy Egg suggests connecting a read-only user.

When Hotjar (now Contentsquare) is still the better choice

Stay if your team uses replays, heatmaps and on-site surveys together and you don't want three tools. Stay if you're under 200k sessions a month and only look at the last few weeks, since the free plan covers that. Stay if you're a bigger site with product and UX teams on Contentsquare's Pro or Enterprise plans, where the session volume goes to 1M and beyond. And if you're being migrated, your sites carry over as Contentsquare projects, so staying is the least work.

How to choose

  • Tight budget, small store: Clarity. It's free and has no traffic cap. Add Lucky Orange if you want chat and surveys in the same app.
  • Heavy Meta or Google spend: Anry, to see which ad sends the visitors who leave and what that costs, with Clarity next to it for the replays.
  • Large store, revenue on the page: Heatmap.com or Contentsquare Pro.
  • Agency with many stores: look at per-store pricing and one login. With Anry, one login covers every store (agencies).
  • You want your AI to read the data: check the MCP column. Clarity and Contentsquare have one for free. Heatmap.com and Mouseflow keep it on their top plans.

Where Anry fits

Anry doesn't replace a heatmap. It answers the question a heatmap can't: which ad sent which visitors to which page, where they left, and what that costs in your own orders. Then it hands the fix to your agent. If you don't run paid ads, or you only want to watch recordings, you don't need Anry. Clarity will do.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still sign up for Hotjar?

No. Contentsquare's Hotjar page says new Hotjar accounts can't be created and points new users to Contentsquare's free plan. Existing Hotjar accounts are being moved to Contentsquare Growth unless the owner opts out.

What's the best free Hotjar alternative?

Microsoft Clarity. It's free with no traffic limit and has an official MCP. Contentsquare's free plan is also generous at 200k sessions a month, but it only keeps 1 month of data.

Is Contentsquare the same as Hotjar?

Contentsquare owns Hotjar, and Hotjar merged into it in July 2025. Hotjar's features (replays, heatmaps, funnels, surveys) now live in Contentsquare's plans, starting free and then $39 a month billed yearly.

What happens to my Hotjar data when my account moves?

After the switch, your Hotjar account is read-only for 90 days, then the Hotjar data is deleted. New data goes to Contentsquare, where your sites carry over as projects. Export anything you want to keep before the 90 days end.

Which Hotjar alternative works with Claude?

Anry, Clarity, Contentsquare and Crazy Egg have an MCP on their entry plans. Mouseflow includes it from Premium and Heatmap.com from Scale. We couldn't find one for Lucky Orange.

Does Microsoft Clarity work on Shopify?

Yes. It records sessions and heatmaps on any site you add its tag to, Shopify included, at no cost. It doesn't see your orders or your ad spend.
