There is no Hotjar-branded MCP: the server Hotjar users connect to Claude is Contentsquare's, at https://api.contentsquare.com/mcp. Contentsquare owns Hotjar and is moving every Hotjar account onto its own platform. Its MCP works from the free plan and can't see anything you recorded in Hotjar before the switch.
What the Hotjar MCP is, and what it isn't
Contentsquare's feature comparison of the two products has a row for MCP. Hotjar's column is a dash (Contentsquare). Hotjar's help center agrees: it lists MCP among the Contentsquare features that "did not have a direct equivalent in Hotjar" (Hotjar Help). Even hotjar.com now redirects to contentsquare.com.
So "Hotjar MCP" means Contentsquare's server. Claude's directory lists it as Anthropic verified, added April 2026, with 21 tools (Claude). Contentsquare only counts the calls that return analytics data, and it names the setup and lookup tools that don't count (Contentsquare support). That leaves 11 data tools, which should count against your cap:
| Returns analytics data, so should count (11) | Named by Contentsquare as not counted (10) |
|---|---|
computeSiteMetrics, computePageGroupMetrics, computePageComparison | list-projects, getPageGroupsForMapping |
computeFunnel, computeJourney, computeImpact | searchSegments, searchGoals, searchMappings |
getTopPageGroupsByLostConversions, getTopPagesBySessionsWithErrors | recommendSegments, recommendGoals, recommendMappings, recommendPageGroups |
getTopErrorsBySessionsWithErrors, getTopErrorsByImpactOnGoal, getTopErrorsByMissedOpportunity | submitMcpFeedback |
A plain question costs one call. Contentsquare's bigger example, product pages against category pages for the paid social segment, makes three calls and is billed as one. The whole account shares the cap. Hit it and the server stops answering until it resets; only Pro and Enterprise can buy more.
The gap is the part Hotjar was known for. Contentsquare says its built-in Sense Analyst covers things the MCP doesn't, including "insights from Session Replay and Zoning" (Contentsquare). Zoning is its zone-by-zone heatmap. Replays and heatmaps stay inside the app.
The other "Hotjar MCP" servers
Search results also turn up Hotjar MCPs from connector platforms like Pipedream, Zapier and StackOne. They sit on Hotjar's public API, which covers survey responses and user lookup, on Scale plans only (Hotjar Help). StackOne's lists four actions, all surveys or user data (StackOne). No heatmaps, no recordings.
If you still have a Hotjar account
Contentsquare has been moving Hotjar accounts in phases since 26 August. What each stage means for an AI agent (Hotjar Help):
- The 30-day window. Contentsquare creates an account for you, your Hotjar tracking code feeds both tools, and the MCP is already included.
- After the switch. Unless the account owner opted out, you're on Contentsquare Growth. Hotjar stops collecting and turns read-only for 12 months, then it's deleted with its data. (One line on Contentsquare's migration page still says 90 days; Hotjar's help center says 12 months.)
- Your history stays behind. "Historical Hotjar analytics data does not move to Contentsquare": heatmaps, recordings, funnels, dashboards. The MCP only sees data from the day Contentsquare started collecting. Survey responses are the exception and do transfer.
- If you opted out. Hotjar carries on and Contentsquare deletes the new account. No MCP, apart from the survey-only wrappers above.
To get Hotjar history in front of Claude, export it before the read-only year ends. Hotjar exports each heatmap as a CSV (clicks per element, and how many visitors reached each scroll depth) and the recordings list as CSV or XLSX, up to 100,000 rows at a time (Hotjar Help). Drop the files into a chat. If the move has you looking elsewhere, our Hotjar alternatives list compares MCP access across seven tools.
Before you start
- A Contentsquare account. Free is $0 for up to 200k sessions a month, with one month of analytics data. Growth is $39 a month billed yearly, or $49 monthly, and keeps 13 months (pricing). Former Hotjar users sign in with their Hotjar login.
- An admin turns it on. Only a Customer Admin can set up the MCP, under Analysis setup, then Model Context Protocol (MCP). To let a teammate use it, the admin opens Account settings, Connected apps, User access, and grants Read.
- A Claude plan with connectors. Free Claude allows one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds it for the organization first (Claude Help).
Set it up in Claude
- In Contentsquare, open Analysis setup, then Model Context Protocol (MCP), and select Claude.
- In Claude, go to Customize, then Connectors, click "+ Add", then "Add custom connector". Or open Contentsquare's listing in Claude's directory and click "Add to Claude".
- Name it "Contentsquare" and paste
https://api.contentsquare.com/mcp. Click Continue. - Keep the sign-in settings Claude detects and click Add.
- Sign in to Contentsquare in the window that opens and allow access.
- In a new chat, click "+", then Connectors, and switch Contentsquare on.
Name the project in every question, as Contentsquare's guide asks.
Claude Code
If Claude Code runs on the same Claude login, the connector you just added already shows under /mcp (Claude Code docs). Contentsquare doesn't document Claude Code. The standard remote command is:
claude mcp add --transport http contentsquare https://api.contentsquare.com/mcp
Then run /mcp and finish the Contentsquare sign-in in your browser.
Cursor
Contentsquare lists Cursor among its supported clients. Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project, or .cursor/mcp.json for one:
{
"mcpServers": {
"contentsquare": {
"url": "https://api.contentsquare.com/mcp"
}
}
}
Cursor handles the OAuth sign-in itself (Cursor docs).
What to ask once it's connected
Adapted from Contentsquare's own examples. On Free, the whole team shares 300 of these a month.
- "In project [name], what's the checkout funnel conversion rate this week against last week?"
- "Compare bounce rate across our landing pages for the last 30 days."
- "Compare conversion between mobile and desktop visitors."
- "Which page groups lose the most conversions?"
- "What are the most common paths to a product page?"
What it can't answer on its own
Contentsquare can split behavior by traffic source, like the paid social segment. But none of its 21 tools connects to Meta or Google Ads, so it can't say which ad bought a visit or what that visit cost. Revenue attribution by campaign sits on the Pro plan (pricing).
Here's what that looks like on anry.io. On our /google-ads landing page, 78 phone visits from our ads between 19 and 28 October, Anry's get_heatmap_summary returned this:
"scroll": {
"depth_reached_by_25_percent": 100,
"depth_reached_by_50_percent": 0,
"depth_reached_by_75_percent": 0,
"max_depth_pixels": 5900,
"total_sessions": 78
}
Half the phone visitors never scrolled at all. Only 1 in 4 got 100 px down a page that's 5,900 px long. A behavior MCP shows you that shape.
Anry also knows who paid for it. It follows each ad click to the visit and the order, so those visits come tied to the ad that bought them, with a price on the leak counted in the store's own orders. Then Anry writes the fix: a page change for Claude Code or Cursor to apply, or an ad change for the ad platform's own tools. It sits next to Contentsquare in Claude Code with one line:
claude mcp add --transport http anry https://mcp.anry.io/mcp
Contentsquare MCP vs Anry vs a Hotjar export
| Contentsquare MCP | Anry MCP | Hotjar export into Claude | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your Hotjar history | No | No | Yes, whatever you export before deletion |
| Funnels, journeys, page metrics | Yes, from the switch on | Pages, traffic sources and priced leaks | A snapshot |
| Replays and heatmaps for the agent | No, those stay in Sense Analyst | Yes, get_session and get_heatmap_summary | Heatmap CSVs and a recordings list |
| Which ad bought the visit, and its cost | No | Yes, Meta and Google | No |
| Can change data | No, Write is reserved | Only its own site diary | No |
| Cost | Free up to 300 calls a month | Paid monthly, free trial with no card | Free |
Is it safe?
It's read-only. Contentsquare's Write permission is "reserved for future MCP tools", like creating a segment or goal, and does nothing today (Contentsquare support). Grant Read only, so nothing changes the day those tools arrive. Sign-in is OAuth, tokens refresh every hour, and the agent sees only the projects you can already see. Contentsquare says it doesn't train third-party models on MCP data. To cut access, remove the server from your AI tool; Contentsquare disables it after 30 days. The general rules are in what an MCP server can and can't do.
Common errors and the fix
| Problem | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Access Denied" when you sign in | Your login can't see that project | Ask an admin for project access |
| No MCP option in Contentsquare | Only Customer Admins can set it up | Ask an admin to set it up, or to grant you Read under Connected apps |
| It stopped answering mid-month | Your account hit its tool-call cap | Wait for the reset, or buy more on Pro or Enterprise |
| It can't find last year's heatmaps | Hotjar history doesn't move to Contentsquare | Open the read-only Hotjar account and export |
Where Anry fits
Contentsquare's MCP is a fair landing spot for anyone leaving Hotjar who wants funnels and journeys in Claude. Anry is for stores that pay for their traffic: it ties each Meta or Google visit to the ad and the order, prices the leaks, and writes the fix for Claude Code, Cursor or the ad platform's tools to apply. It's an MCP with 23 tools, one plan with every feature, billed monthly, free trial with no card (pricing). If you don't run ads, Contentsquare Free or Clarity covers you, and we compared the two.
Frequently asked questions
Does Hotjar have an MCP server?
No. Hotjar never had one, and its help center lists MCP as a Contentsquare feature with no Hotjar equivalent. Hotjar users get Contentsquare's MCP at https://api.contentsquare.com/mcp.
Is the Contentsquare MCP free?
Yes, on the free plan, up to 300 tool calls a month for the whole account. Growth allows 36k a year, Pro 72k and Enterprise 108k. Only calls that return analytics data count.
Can the MCP read my old Hotjar heatmaps and recordings?
No. Historical Hotjar data stays in Hotjar, read-only for 12 months after the switch, then it's deleted. Export the heatmap CSVs and recordings list for Claude to read.
Can Claude watch my session replays through it?
No. Contentsquare keeps replay and zoning insights in its built-in Sense Analyst, not in the MCP.
Does the Contentsquare MCP work in Claude Code?
Contentsquare doesn't document it, but it's a standard remote server with OAuth. Add it with claude mcp add --transport http, or add it in Claude and log in to Claude Code with the same account.
