What actually matters for Shopify stores
CRO tools do four different jobs, and it's easy to pay twice for the same one. A few things to get right before you pick.
- Find the leak before you test. The median Shopify store converts 1.4% of sessions (Littledata, October 2026), and about 70% of carts are abandoned (Baymard). There's a leak somewhere in every store. A test on the wrong page uses up traffic you could have spent on the right one.
- Shopify now runs A/B tests itself. Rollouts lets you test a theme, checkout, catalog or discount change against your live store. Experiments need the Grow plan or higher (Shopify help). So a paid testing app has to earn its price on what Rollouts can't do.
- On paid traffic, the ad decides who arrives. A behaviour tool sees the page. If an ad sends the wrong people, the page looks broken when it isn't. You need something that joins the ad to the visit.
- Your AI can read most of these now. Check what the MCP is allowed to do. Some read only. Others can create tests: Convert says its MCP servers can "create experiences" (Convert pricing).
The 9 best CRO tools for Shopify, by job
In the order I'd use them: find the leak, watch it, ask the buyers, then test the fix.
Job 1: find where you lose money
1. Anry: for finding which ad, page or device loses the sale
Anry follows each ad click to the visit and the order. It finds where the money leaks (a page, a device, an ad sending the wrong people) and puts a price on each leak, counted in your store's own orders rather than in what Meta or Google report. Detection and pricing are deterministic code. No AI decides what's a leak; an LLM only writes the explanation and the suggested fix.
You use it inside Claude, Claude Code or Cursor through a read-only MCP with 16 tools. Ask "where am I losing money this week?" and get_revenue_leaks returns the leaks with their price. get_campaign_spend puts each campaign's spend next to the orders it actually brought, and list_opportunities gives the shortlist to fix first. Then your agent gets the fix ("Ask Anry"). Anry never changes your store, ads or settings.
- Best for: Shopify, WooCommerce and PrestaShop stores running Meta or Google ads that want a ranked list of what to fix, in dollars.
- Price: $99 a month up to 25K sessions, one plan with every feature, billed monthly. 14-day free trial, no card (pricing).
- The catch: no session replay and no A/B testing. It tells you where to look and what it costs. Use Job 2 to watch it and Job 4 to test the fix.
Job 2: see what people do on the page
2. Microsoft Clarity: free recordings and heatmaps
Clarity is free with "no traffic limits" (Clarity), and Microsoft publishes an official MCP server (GitHub).
- Best for: every store. There's no reason not to have it.
- Price: free.
- The catch: recordings are kept 30 days, heatmap data 9 months (Microsoft Learn). No revenue, no ad spend.
3. Lucky Orange: the Shopify all-in-one
Lucky Orange puts recordings, heatmaps, funnels, form analytics, surveys and live chat in one Shopify app, rated 4.6 from 901 reviews (Shopify App Store).
- Best for: small stores that want every behaviour tool in one app.
- Price: free for 100 sessions a month, then Launch $19 (500 sessions), Build $39 (3,500) and Grow $89 (10,000), 20% off yearly.
- The catch: low session caps at the cheap end, and we couldn't find an MCP.
4. Contentsquare: Hotjar's successor
Hotjar merged into Contentsquare and new Hotjar accounts can't be created anymore (Contentsquare). Every Contentsquare plan includes session replays, heatmaps, funnels and surveys.
- Best for: teams that want replays and on-site surveys from one vendor.
- Price: free for 200k sessions a month with 1 month of data, then Growth at $39 a month billed yearly ($49 monthly) from 7k sessions, with 13 months of data (pricing).
- The catch: MCP calls are capped (300 a month on Free, 36k a year on Growth), and the free plan only keeps a month.
Job 3: ask the people who bought
5. KNO Post Purchase Surveys: why people bought
KNO (KnoCommerce) asks buyers a few questions right after checkout: where they heard of you, why they bought, what nearly stopped them. Rated 4.9 from 118 reviews (Shopify App Store).
- Best for: stores that want the buyer's own words next to the numbers.
- Price: Starter $19 a month (1 survey, 3 questions, unlimited responses), Analyst $119, Pro $299. 7-day trial.
- The catch: it only hears from people who bought, so it can't tell you why the others left. The Claude connector is in beta and needs Analyst or above (KNO docs).
Job 4: test the fix
6. Shopify Rollouts: free A/B tests built into Shopify
Rollouts sits under Markets in your admin. An experiment can test one change to your main theme, one checkout and accounts configuration, catalog changes and a discount change against your live store (Shopify help). Shopify announced it in March 2026 and added checkout tests in June (Shopify changelog).
- Best for: any store on Grow or higher that wants to test a theme change before it goes live.
- Price: included in your Shopify plan. Experiments need Grow or higher; scheduled launches work from Basic.
- The catch: online store only, no headless. You can't edit Liquid templates inside a rollout, and vintage themes aren't supported (Shopify help).
7. Intelligems: price, shipping and offer tests
Intelligems tests the things that move margin: prices, free shipping thresholds, discounts, bundles and page content. It's rated 4.8 from 199 reviews (Shopify App Store), and its MCP for Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini comes with every paid plan (Intelligems pricing).
- Best for: stores that want to test price and shipping, not just layout.
- Price: Smart Content from $69 a month, Smart Merchandise and Smart Shipping $112.10, Unlimited $349, all scaling with your order volume. 14-day trial.
- The catch: the price climbs with your orders, and price testing (Smart Pricing) isn't in the trial.
8. Shoplift: theme and template tests for Shopify
Shoplift tests templates, themes and URLs, with price testing from the Advanced plan. It's rated 4.9 from 134 reviews (Shopify App Store).
- Best for: stores that want to test page layouts without a developer.
- Price: Core $99 a month, or $74 a month billed yearly. Advanced from $299, Pro from $699. Priced on "total monthly website visitors, not tested visitors" (Shoplift pricing). 14-day trial.
- The catch: for plain theme tests it now overlaps with Rollouts, which is free on Grow. And we couldn't find an MCP.
9. Convert: full A/B testing for any page
Convert is a general A/B testing platform with a native Shopify app, theme and price testing (Convert). Its MCP server is on every plan.
- Best for: stores or agencies running a steady testing programme across many page types.
- Price: Growth $399 a month, or $299 a month billed yearly, for 100K tested users a month. Pro $599 ($420 yearly). 15-day trial, no card (Convert pricing).
- The catch: the most expensive way to run a simple theme test. It's worth it if you test every month.
When a full CRO platform is still the better choice
If you run more than one test a month and have the traffic for it, a dedicated platform like Convert, or Contentsquare's bigger plans, will serve you better than a stack of small apps. The same goes for a team with a CRO specialist who wants segments, custom goals and one place for every experiment. And if your problem is checkout or pricing rather than paid traffic, Intelligems is built for exactly that.
How to choose
- Under $1M a year: Clarity plus Shopify Rollouts costs nothing beyond your Grow plan. Add Anry if most of your traffic is paid and it isn't converting.
- $1M to $10M, heavy Meta or Google spend: Anry to find and price the leak, Clarity to watch it, then Rollouts or Intelligems to test the fix.
- Checkout and margin questions: Intelligems for price and shipping tests, KNO to hear why people bought.
- Agency with many stores: look at per-store pricing and one login. With Anry, one login covers every store (agencies).
Where Anry fits
Anry does Job 1: it tells you which ad, page or device loses money and how much, in your own orders, and hands the fix to your agent. It doesn't replay sessions or run tests, so it sits next to Clarity and Rollouts rather than replacing them. If you don't run paid ads and your traffic is mostly organic, start with Clarity and Rollouts. You may not need Anry yet.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free CRO tool for Shopify?
Microsoft Clarity for recordings and heatmaps, and Shopify Rollouts for A/B tests if you're on Grow or higher. Together they cover watching and testing at no extra cost.
Does Shopify have built-in A/B testing?
Yes. Rollouts, under Markets in the Shopify admin, runs experiments on your theme, checkout, catalogs and discounts. Experiments need the Grow plan or higher.
Do I need an A/B testing app if I have Shopify Rollouts?
Only for what Rollouts can't do: Liquid template changes, vintage themes and headless stores. Testing apps also add their own test types, like free shipping thresholds in Intelligems or URL split tests in Shoplift.
What's the difference between CRO tools and analytics tools?
Analytics tells you what happened: sessions, conversion rate, revenue. CRO tools help you change it: they show why people leave, ask them, and test a fix. Anry sits between the two, pricing each leak so you know which to fix first.
Which CRO tools work with Claude?
Anry, Clarity, Contentsquare, Intelligems and Convert have an MCP on their entry plans. KNO's is in beta from its Analyst plan. We couldn't find one for Lucky Orange or Shoplift.
