Start where the visitor starts
CRO guides tend to hand you a list of tips. The order matters more. A product page rewrite can't save visitors who were never going to buy, and an A/B test on the wrong page spends traffic you needed for the right one. So go the way the visitor goes: ad, first screen, phone, product, payment. Test last.
One thing before step 1. Shopify changed how it counts sessions on 21 to 23 September 2026, so only compare numbers from after that. How Shopify analytics counts sessions and conversions has the definitions, and what's a good Shopify conversion rate has the 2026 benchmarks by category.
What to check, in order
1. Is the traffic real, and the right people?
Bots and badly targeted visitors pull the rate down before anyone judges the page. Shopify now filters identified bots by default, but its classifier is built to miss some bots rather than mislabel customers (Shopify Help). And real people can still be the wrong people.
In Shopify: open Sessions by referrer, keep human sessions, and compare conversion rate by traffic type: direct, organic and paid (shopify.dev). If paid converts far below the others on the same pages, the fix probably starts in Ads Manager, not in your theme. How to spot bot waves is covered in traffic but no sales.
2. Does the page continue the ad?
People tap because the ad promised a product, a price or an offer. If the page opens on something else, they leave, and the page takes the blame for the ad's choice.
In Shopify: give every ad link a utm_campaign and a utm_content value per ad. Shopify credits traffic with utm_campaign to marketing (Shopify Help), and its own docs describe utm_content as the field "often used to distinguish ads" (shopify.dev). Then group bounce rate by utm_content and landing page. One ad bouncing far harder than the others on the same page points to a mismatch. Ad and landing page mismatch has the check lists for Meta and Google, and Meta ads getting clicks but no sales covers the placement and goal settings that send the wrong people.
3. Does the first screen do the work?
Here's our own landing page, anry.io/shopify, from Anry's heatmaps up to 20 October 2026. Half of visitors stopped scrolling by 100 px. One in four got past 700 px, on a page 7,408 px long. Three in four never scrolled past 700 px.
So the first screen carries the sale. It needs what the ad promised: the product, the price or offer, and the button. Proof and detail can sit lower, for the quarter who scroll.
In Shopify: open Sessions by landing page, add bounce rate, and take your three busiest paid landing pages. Open each one on a phone, from the ad link, and read only what shows before you scroll (behavior reports). If the price or the button isn't there, move it up before you change anything else.
4. Is one phone worse than the other?
"Mobile" is one number in most reports, and it can hide two very different groups. On the same /shopify page, iPhone visits recorded no scroll or tap 47% of the time, against 15% on Android. Blend those into one mobile figure and the gap disappears.
In Shopify: group conversion rate and bounce rate by session_device_os as well as device type. Shopify's sessions schema suggests exactly this breakdown for finding which devices convert (shopify.dev). If iPhone lags, tap your own ad on an iPhone and go all the way to checkout. The phone-only leaks, from in-app browsers to missing wallets, are in why mobile converts worse than desktop.
5. Do product pages get added to cart?
Once the right people stay, the product page has to settle the last doubts: will it fit, when will it arrive, what will it really cost.
In Shopify: in Sessions by landing page, add the added to cart rate and compare product pages with each other. The weakest ones with real traffic go first. Then open Searches with no results, which lists the terms people searched in your store that returned no products (behavior reports). That's demand you already have and aren't serving. If carts fill and checkouts don't, the cart is the problem, and add to cart but no sales works through it.
6. Can people actually pay?
A payment step that breaks for some buyers looks like ordinary drop-off in the conversion reports. You only see it as fewer completed checkouts.
In Shopify: read Conversion rate breakdown for the gap between sessions that reached checkout and sessions that completed it. Then pay for something yourself. Shopify has a test gateway and a Shopify Payments test mode, but customers can't place live orders while a provider is in test mode. A real card avoids that, though the processor may charge a fee on the order you refund (Shopify Help). The checkout settings that lose buyers, and the recovery email, are in Shopify abandoned checkout. Run steps 1, 4 and 6 again the week before a big sale; the Black Friday checklist for Shopify has the rest.
7. Test the change before everyone gets it
Shopify runs A/B tests itself now. Markets > Rollouts has an Experiment type that splits visitors 50/50 between your current setup and the change, and ends 90 days after it starts by default (Shopify Help). Experiments need the Grow plan or higher. They can't change Liquid templates or run on vintage themes, and they only cover the online store (Shopify Help).
A theme experiment reports conversion rate, bounce rate, reached checkout rate and add to cart rate. A checkout experiment reports checkout conversion rate (Shopify Help). The help page doesn't say when a result counts as final, so fix the run length and what a win looks like before you start. A small store may not have the traffic for a clear answer at all; the traffic section of our CRO agency post shows how much testing needs.
8. Bring in help when the list runs out
Steps 1 to 6 need your admin, a phone and a few quiet hours. Past that, you're paying for one of three things: software that watches the pages for you, an audit that ranks what to fix, or an agency that runs tests every month. CRO tools for Shopify groups the software by job, including the testing apps for what Rollouts can't do. CRO audit cost lists published audit prices, and CRO agency cost covers retainers and minimum terms.
Where Anry fits
Anry does most of its work in steps 1 to 4, and it flags pages further down the funnel that lose visitors too. It follows each Meta or Google ad click to the visit and the order, finds where paid visitors fall away (an ad, a page, a device) and prices each leak in your store's own orders. The scroll and iPhone numbers above came from its heatmaps and sessions on our own site. It's a read-only MCP server in Claude, Claude Code or Cursor, and the fix goes to your own agent to make.
If your traffic is mostly organic and you don't run ads, Shopify's reports and a phone will take you through this list without it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I increase my conversion rate on Shopify?
Work in the order your visitors move. Check the traffic is real and matched to the page, then fix the first screen and the phone experience, then product pages and payment. Test bigger changes with a Rollouts experiment before everyone sees them.
What should I fix first on a Shopify store?
The traffic, if paid visitors convert far below direct and organic ones on the same pages. If every source converts poorly, start with the first screen of your busiest landing page, on a phone.
How do I see iPhone vs Android conversion rate in Shopify?
Build a report on the sessions data and group conversion rate by session_device_os. Sessions by device groups by device type, which puts every phone in one bucket and can hide an iPhone problem.
What does a Shopify Rollouts experiment measure?
For a theme change: conversion rate, bounce rate, reached checkout rate and add to cart rate. For a checkout change: checkout conversion rate. Traffic splits 50/50 by default, and experiments need the Grow plan or higher.
