| Check | What it looks like | Cheapest fix |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Is the leak really at the cart? | Plenty of cart additions, few sessions that reached checkout | Read Shopify's Conversion rate breakdown by device and referrer |
| 2. Does the checkout button work? | Button missing, flickering or blank in the cart drawer | Test on your phone, then switch apps off one at a time |
| 3. What does the cart say about shipping? | "Shipping calculated at checkout" and nothing else | Show the shipping cost or a free shipping threshold in the cart |
| 4. Is the discount box sending people away? | Shoppers leave to look for a code | Hide the field behind a link, or apply the discount for them |
| 5. Can they pay the way they want? | Express buttons missing or blank before checkout | Turn on accelerated checkout buttons and test them in the drawer |
| 6. Does the cart answer delivery and returns? | Nothing near the button about when it arrives or how to send it back | One line on delivery time and one on returns, next to the button |
What to check, in order
This post is only about the gap between "added to cart" and "started checkout". If people aren't adding to cart at all, go to the traffic but no sales checks first. If they reach checkout and leave there, that's a different set of settings, covered in Shopify abandoned checkout.
1. Is the leak really at the cart?
Open Conversion rate breakdown in Shopify Analytics and compare two lines: sessions with cart additions and sessions that reached checkout (Shopify Help).
Some loss here is normal. Across 427 Shopify stores, the median store loses 78% of the sessions that add to cart before a purchase. The top 20% lose 65% or less, the top 10% lose 57% or less (Littledata, July to October 2026). Baymard's average across 50 studies, all of ecommerce, is 70.22% (Baymard).
One detail matters before you blame the cart. Shopify only counts a session as "reached checkout" once the shopper types or clicks something in checkout. Someone who opens checkout, sees the total and closes the tab shows up as cart drop-off. So if the gap looks huge, part of it may be a checkout problem in disguise.
Then split the same report by device and by referrer. A cart that works on desktop and fails on mobile is usually a bug, which is check 2.
2. Does the checkout button work?
Take your phone, add something to the cart from an ad link, and press Checkout from the cart drawer, the cart page and the pop-up notification if your theme has one. All three, because they're built differently.
This comes up on the Shopify Community a lot. In April 2026 a merchant reported the button in the cart "disappears, then come back". The cause was two apps that both controlled the checkout button, "playing tug-o-war" (thread). Another merchant on Dawn found the Checkout button gone from the cart page, the drawer and the notification at once, and suspected a discounts app (thread).
Cart drawers load by script, so any app that edits the cart afterwards (upsell, shipping protection, discounts) can break them. To find the culprit, duplicate your theme, test the preview, and switch apps off one at a time until the button behaves.
3. What does the cart say about shipping?
Read your cart as a stranger would. Dawn, Shopify's reference theme, ships with lines like "Taxes, discounts and shipping calculated at checkout" under the subtotal (Dawn on GitHub). That's accurate, and it also means the shopper still doesn't know the price.
Extra costs being too high is the top reason people abandon, at 40% of shoppers who meant to buy, and 12% leave because they couldn't see or work out the total up front (Baymard). In Baymard's testing, 64% of users looked for shipping costs on the product page, yet 43% of sites showed none there (Baymard). Shopify's marketing guide says the same: put shipping costs in front of shoppers early (Shopify Help).
The fix costs nothing: replace the generic line with your real shipping rule, and if you have a free shipping threshold, show how far the cart is from it.
4. Is the discount box sending people away?
The discount field cuts both ways.
If there's an empty box labelled "Discount code" in plain sight, some shoppers stop and go looking for a code. A few never come back. Baymard found 70% of sites have a promo code field and 35% show it open by default, and recommends hiding it behind a link instead (Baymard).
The opposite problem is common on Shopify. A shopper arrives from an ad or an email with a code, and the cart has nowhere to enter it. Dawn has no setting for a discount box in the cart, as a February 2026 Community thread confirms; a reply in the same thread says Shopify's newer Horizon themes do have one (thread). If your ads promise 15% off, either apply it automatically or tell people where the code goes.
5. Can they pay the way they want?
Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Amazon Pay can appear as accelerated checkout buttons on the product page and, in many themes, in the cart. Shopify itself warns that hiding them "might have a negative impact on your conversion rates" (Shopify Help).
Check they render in the cart drawer, not only on the full cart page. A merchant on the Pipeline theme found the express buttons blank in the drawer while they worked on the cart page, likely a script conflict with how the drawer loads (thread).
6. Does the cart answer delivery and returns?
The cart is the last page a shopper sees before handing over a card, so it's the place to answer the last doubts. In Baymard's survey, 20% of shoppers with intent to buy left because delivery was too slow, 19% didn't trust the site with their card, and 13% didn't like the returns policy (Baymard).
You don't need a row of badges. You need one line with a delivery estimate and one with the returns rule, both next to the button, both true.
Is it the ads or the site?
People who add to cart from a cold ad behave differently from people who searched for you. Baymard found 42% of US shoppers have abandoned a cart because they were just browsing (Baymard). For some social traffic, the cart is a wishlist.
So read the cart-to-checkout gap per referrer. If every source drops off at the cart, the cart is the problem and checks 2 to 6 apply. If one ad source fills carts and nothing else, while search and direct visitors carry on to checkout, your cart is fine. That ad is buying browsers, and the fix is in the targeting or the offer.
Where Anry fits
Shopify counts the carts that didn't become checkouts. What it doesn't show is what each of those shoppers did before leaving. Anry joins each ad click to the session it opened and the order it did or didn't lead to, flags leaks like a cart that fails for one source or one device, and prices each one from your store's own orders. In Claude or Cursor, your agent can list the sessions one campaign sent to /cart and read each one's journey, then suggest the fix for you to approve.
If check 2 finds a broken button, you don't need Anry. Fix the button first.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 70% cart abandonment rate normal on Shopify?
Yes. Littledata's median Shopify store loses 78% of carts before purchase, and even the top 10% lose 57%. Look for the segment that's far worse than your average.
Why does my Shopify cart say shipping is calculated at checkout?
It's the default text in Dawn and many other themes. It's correct, but it leaves the total open, and an unknown total is one of the top reasons people leave. Edit it to state your actual shipping rule or free shipping threshold.
Should I add a discount code box to my Shopify cart?
Only if your marketing hands out codes. If it does, give people a place to enter them, collapsed behind a link. If it doesn't, an open discount box mostly sends shoppers off to search for codes.
Does Shopify email people who abandon their cart?
Shopify's built-in recovery email only goes to people who started checkout and entered an email. Someone who leaves from the cart has given you no address, so the email can't reach them. The abandoned checkout guide covers how that email works.
