Black Friday Shopify checklist for 2026

Black Friday is November 27, 2026. Check where BFCM money leaks, in this order: tracking, ads to pages, mobile, checkout, discount codes, apps and bots. Then check every morning.

Black Friday is Friday, November 27, 2026. Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30. That's just over five weeks away.

Last year Shopify merchants sold $14.6 billion over the Black Friday Cyber Monday weekend, 27% more than in 2024, with a peak of $5.1 million a minute at 12:01 p.m. EST on Black Friday (Shopify). A leak costs the most on the days you have the least time to look for it.

This list covers only where BFCM money leaks, in the order I'd check it. Offers, email calendars and stock are in Shopify's own 25-step checklist.

What to check, in order

1. Tracking, before the spike

Every decision in sale week reads from these numbers. Tap one of your own ads on your phone and buy something. Then find that purchase in Shopify, in Meta Events Manager and in Google Ads. If one misses it, that platform spends your Black Friday budget half blind. Meta ads getting clicks but no sales shows how to read Meta's purchase events against your orders.

In Shopify's Facebook & Instagram app, check Data sharing settings. Standard relies on the browser pixel, which ad blockers can stop. Enhanced and Maximum add the Conversions API, sent server to server (Shopify Help).

One thing changed this year. From September 21 to 23, 2026, Shopify changed how it counts sessions: identified bots are filtered out by default, and sessions no longer end at midnight UTC. Shopify says to treat the new numbers as a baseline and look at orders, sales and customers alongside sessions (Shopify Help). So this year's BFCM conversion rate can't be compared with last year's. Compare orders and sales.

Then leave tracking alone until December.

2. Every sale ad opens a page that shows the sale

A BFCM ad promises a percentage, a product, a deadline. The page has to repeat it on the first screen. List every sale ad next to the page it opens and check they match. The general version is in ad and landing page mismatch.

For Shopping ads, Google says a product whose page price doesn't match the feed "may be disapproved", and asks for the sale price effective date in the right time zone (Merchant Center Help). And give every Black Friday creative an end date, so none still runs on December 1.

3. Mobile and the first screen

On Cyber Monday 2025, 57.5% of US online sales came through a mobile device (Adobe).

Tap your own sale ad on an iPhone. Without scrolling, you should see offer, product, price and a button, with no cookie banner, email pop-up or spin-to-win wheel on top. Shopify's checklist says to limit deal pop-ups so they don't interrupt browsing or checkout. If phones already convert badly, why mobile converts worse than desktop has six phone-only checks.

4. Checkout and payment methods

32% of BFCM 2025 orders on Shopify were paid with Shop Pay (Shopify). Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay and PayPal show in an Express Checkout section at the top of checkout (Shopify Help). Buy once on an iPhone and once on an Android, and check every wallet you turned on appears.

In Baymard's survey, 40% of shoppers who left a checkout said extra costs were too high, and 12% couldn't see the total up front (Baymard). If your BFCM shipping offer changes, show it before checkout. Form fields and recovery emails are in Shopify abandoned checkout.

5. Discount codes

Shopify's checklist says to test every discount code and automatic discount at checkout before the sale. Three settings cause most surprises:

  • Time zone. Start and end times follow your admin's time zone. Shopify's own example: on EST, a start date of November 26 means 12:00 a.m. EST that day (Shopify Help).
  • Combinations. Discounts only stack when each one allows it, and an order takes at most 5 product or order codes and 1 shipping code (Shopify Help). Test your code on top of any automatic discount.
  • Limits. Every code gets an end date, and a usage limit where it fits.

Then assume the code will travel. Black Friday codes end up on coupon sites and in browser extensions that test codes at checkout. Give each channel its own code, and Shopify's Sales by discount codes report shows which one got out.

6. Apps and speed

Shopify's advice: "Review your installed apps and remove any that aren't essential for sales." Uninstalling an app doesn't remove its code from your theme, and your tag manager needs the same clean-out (Shopify Help). Shopify's bar for a good load is the main content within 2.5 seconds (Shopify Help).

Clean out now, then freeze: no new apps or theme edits in the week before Black Friday. Build sale changes on a duplicate theme and publish it once.

7. Bot traffic

Shopify now filters identified bots out of session reports, and its "Human or bot session" filter shows both (Shopify Changelog). Ad platforms don't filter for you.

We launched a 7-ad Meta creative test for anry.io on October 19, 2026. The first 8 "conversions" Meta reported were all Meta's own ad-review bots, visiting from data center towns, some faking Instagram and Facebook in-app browsers. Real trial-button taps from those ads: 0. A new ad's first day is exactly when Black Friday ads get judged, so check its conversions came from people before you scale it.

Is it the ads or the site?

In sale week the ads and the site both change, and ad dashboards only see one side. From October 12 to 20, 2026, 1,103 people came to anry.io from our paid Meta ads, and 99.3% left after one page. Of 254 who came in directly, 73.1% did. Same pages, very different visitors. anry.io doesn't sell products, so these are one-page exits, not lost orders, but a store splits the same way. If a sale page loses everyone, fix the page. If it loses one ad's visitors, fix the ad, its audience or its placements. Meta's dashboard couldn't tell us who stayed. That takes joining the ad to the visit.

Every morning of BFCM week

From Monday, November 23 to Tuesday, December 1, run the same check before you touch a budget:

  1. Orders and sales against the same day last year, not conversion rate.
  2. Spend per campaign next to the visits and orders it brought.
  3. Sales by discount codes: a code you never sent out, or one used far more than planned.
  4. One test order from a live ad, on your phone.
  5. Anything new since yesterday: a page, device or ad that stopped selling.

With Anry connected, these become questions for your agent in Claude, Claude Code or Cursor, answered by real Anry tools:

Where Anry fits

Anry joins each Meta or Google ad click to what that visitor did on the site and whether they ordered. In sale week that means you see which ad, page or device is losing orders, priced in your own orders. Detection is deterministic code. An LLM only writes the explanation and the suggested fix, which goes to your agent. It's read-only, so nothing in your store or ad accounts changes in sale week unless you change it.

If your BFCM sale runs on email and returning customers, without paid ads, skip it. Shopify's reports and the checks above are enough.

Frequently asked questions

When is Black Friday 2026?

Friday, November 27, 2026, the day after US Thanksgiving. Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30.

What does BFCM mean on Shopify?

Black Friday Cyber Monday, the four days from Black Friday to Cyber Monday. Shopify reports its merchants' sales for that weekend every year: $14.6 billion in 2025, with an average cart of $114.70.

Why is my Black Friday conversion rate different from last year?

Partly because Shopify changed how it counts sessions on September 21 to 23, 2026. Bots are filtered out by default and sessions no longer end at midnight UTC. Compare orders and sales with last year instead.

Should I use a discount code or an automatic discount for Black Friday?

Shopify says automatic discounts suit site-wide sales, with the risk that customers don't notice them or get too high a discount. Codes suit targeted offers but can leak. One clean split: an automatic discount for the public sale, separate codes for email and partners.
