What is an MCP server? A guide for online stores

An MCP server lets an AI agent like Claude use another tool's data and actions. Shopify, Meta, Google and Klaviyo all have one. Here's what that means for your store.

What is MCP?An open standard for plugging AI apps (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor) into other software
What is an MCP server? The piece a company runs so your AI agent can use its product: read data, sometimes take actions
Who made it?Anthropic, in November 2024. Since December 2025 it sits in a Linux Foundation fund
Local or remote?Local runs on your computer. Remote is hosted by the company and you sign in with OAuth
Can it change my store?Depends on the server. Some only read. Others can create discounts or ad campaigns
Do store tools have one?Yes: Shopify, Meta Ads, Google Ads, Google Analytics, Klaviyo, Triple Whale, Polar, Northbeam

The short answer

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a common plug between AI apps and the rest of your software. An MCP server is the company's side of that plug. Shopify's lets Claude look up your orders, Meta's lets it pull your ad spend, and you connect each one by pasting a URL and signing in.

What it is

Anthropic released MCP on 25 November 2024 as "an open standard that enables developers to build secure, two-way connections between their data sources and AI-powered tools" (Anthropic). The official docs compare it to a USB-C port: one shape of connector, so any AI app can plug into any tool that supports it (MCP docs).

It caught on fast. By December 2025 there were more than 10,000 active public MCP servers, and ChatGPT, Cursor, Gemini and VS Code had adopted it. That month Anthropic handed MCP to the Agentic AI Foundation, a Linux Foundation fund co-founded with Block and OpenAI (Anthropic).

What a server can offer

Your AI app (the "host") opens one connection per server you add. The spec defines three things a server can hand to your agent through it (MCP architecture):

  • Tools: actions the agent can run. "Get campaign spend", "create a discount code".
  • Resources: data the agent can read, like a file or a database record.
  • Prompts: reusable instructions the server ships for common jobs.

For store tools, it's almost all tools.

How they talk

When you connect a server, your AI app asks it for its list of tools, each with a plain description. When your question needs one, the agent calls it and reads the answer before replying. You ask "what did we spend on Meta last week?" and it picks the spend tool on its own.

Local vs remote

A local server runs on your own computer, set up in a config file, often with an API key. Google's official Ads and Analytics servers work this way.

A remote server is hosted by the company. You paste its URL into Claude, sign in on the company's own login page, and approve access. The spec recommends OAuth for this, based on OAuth 2.1 (MCP authorization). The agent gets a token for that one server. It never sees your password.

For a store owner, remote is the one that matters. Nothing to install, no keys to copy.

What it isn't

MCP has no intelligence of its own. The model still does the thinking. The server only passes it data and actions.

Connecting a server doesn't make it safe by default. Some servers only read. Others can change things. Meta's server can create and edit campaigns, though new ones start paused (Meta docs). Shopify's can create discount codes and update inventory (Claude connectors). Read what each one can do before you say yes.

A server only knows its own platform. Meta's server can't see your Shopify orders, and Shopify's can't see your ad spend. Connect both and the agent puts them side by side, but the agent does the joining, and it can guess wrong.

Does it actually matter for a store?

Yes, because it changes where you ask questions. Instead of exporting a CSV from Shopify and another from Ads Manager, you ask the agent and it pulls both. A question that crosses tools becomes a chat message instead of a spreadsheet afternoon.

Two cautions. First, every server answers in its own platform's numbers. Meta counts conversions its way, Shopify counts orders, and the agent may blend them unless you say which to trust.

Second, write access is real access. When I connected Meta's official Ads MCP to Claude Code on 19 October 2026, it listed 97 tools, many of them able to create or change ads. The good news is that new campaigns are created paused. Start read-only, and allow write tools only for jobs you've watched the agent do well.

Shopify also runs separate servers for shopping agents: catalog, cart and checkout, now under its Universal Commerce Protocol (Shopify). Those let a buyer's AI shop your store. They're not for you to run the business.

Where Anry fits

Every server above reports what its own platform saw. Anry, also a remote MCP server, follows each Meta or Google ad click to the visit and the order, finds where money leaks (a page, a device, an ad sending the wrong people), and puts a price on each leak in your store's own orders. It's read-only, signs in with OAuth 2.1, and none of its 16 tools can change your data, settings, campaigns or ads.

Here's what your agent can call once it's connected (descriptions from the Anry MCP docs):

ToolWhat it returns
list_sitesThe stores your login can see
get_site_statusTracking, purchases, ad connections and store integrations
list_opportunitiesThe findings on your dashboard right now, each with a price
get_revenue_leaksRevenue at risk this week and month, and the top leaks ranked by cost
get_issueThe full evidence behind one leak
list_questionsThe questions your team asked Anry to keep answering
list_reportsEvery dated report, for every page, campaign, ad and question
get_reportOne report, exactly as the dashboard shows it
get_analytics_overviewFunnel numbers with page and source breakdowns
get_top_pagesHow each page performs
get_traffic_sourcesWhere visitors come from
list_sessionsSession summaries behind a report
get_sessionOne visit, step by step
get_heatmap_summaryClicks and scroll depth on a page
get_campaign_spendSpend and revenue per campaign and ad
get_paid_waste_summarySpend lost on ads too small to get their own finding

In Claude Code it's one line:

claude mcp add --transport http anry https://mcp.anry.io/mcp

In Claude, add the same URL as a custom connector; in Cursor, add it to your MCP settings. The fix goes to your own agent. Anry never makes a change itself.

If all you want is to look up orders or pull last week's spend in chat, you don't need Anry. Shopify's and Meta's own servers do that.

Frequently asked questions

What does MCP stand for?

Model Context Protocol, the open standard Anthropic released in November 2024 for connecting AI apps to other software. An MCP server exposes one product's data and actions through it.

Is it safe to connect an MCP server to my store?

Read-only servers (Google Ads, Google Analytics, Polar, Northbeam, Anry) can't change anything. Shopify's, Meta's and Klaviyo's can, so check which tools you allow. Remote servers use OAuth, so the agent never sees your password.

Does Shopify have an official MCP server?

Yes. Shopify's connector at https://setup.shopify.com/mcp lets an agent read and manage products, orders, customers, inventory and discounts.

Do I need to be a developer to use one?

Not for remote servers. In Claude you add a custom connector, paste the URL and sign in. Local servers still need a config file.
