ChatGPT for Shopify: sell in ChatGPT, or run your store from it

Two different setups. Your products can already show up in ChatGPT, with checkout on your own store. To ask ChatGPT about your sales, install Shopify's plugin for ChatGPT.

"ChatGPT Shopify" covers two jobs with almost nothing in common. One is selling: someone asks ChatGPT for a waterproof jacket and yours shows up. The other is running the store: you ask ChatGPT about your own orders, or have it add a product. Different setup, different rules, different costs. Here's where each one stands in October 2026.

Selling in ChatGPT

Shopify calls this agentic storefronts. Shopify Catalog sends your product data (title, description, images, price, stock) to AI channels, and ChatGPT is one of them. It's on by default for eligible stores (Shopify Help). OpenAI says the same from its side: if you sell through Shopify, "your catalog is already integrated, and no additional setup or application is required" (OpenAI).

Where the sale happens

Many guides that rank for this still describe a Buy button inside ChatGPT. That's gone. In March 2026 OpenAI said the first version of Instant Checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide" and let merchants keep their own checkout instead (OpenAI).

Shopify now treats ChatGPT as a "discovery-focused referrer". A buyer taps your product and pays on your normal checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser on mobile or a new tab on the web (Shopify Help). Your discounts and payment methods all work, because it's your checkout. Shopify's terms allow a fee on some AI channels (Shopify), but for ChatGPT it says there's none beyond payment processing.

Shopping in ChatGPT is live for US users only (OpenAI). Google, Microsoft Copilot and Meta can offer checkout inside the chat. ChatGPT can't.

Who's eligible

Shopify's rules as of October 2026:

  • You sell to customers in the US. Your store can be based anywhere.
  • Your store is on the Starter plan or higher, has no storefront password and isn't B2B-only (Shopify Help).
  • Your terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy are filled in under Settings, then Policies.
  • Each product has a title, an image and a price above zero, and is published to your online store, not Unlisted.
  • Some categories never go in: alcohol, tobacco and vapes, CBD, weapons, adult products, services and event tickets, among others.
  • Your account has a track record: verified email, two-step authentication, real sales, prompt fulfillment, few chargebacks, invoices paid on time.
  • You accept the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms.

Legal disclosures belong in the first 6,000 characters of the product description.

Check your products are in ChatGPT

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Sales channels, then Agentic. You need to be the owner or have the Agentic staff permission.
  2. Under Sources, find Shopify Catalog. A product count means you're in. "Ineligible" means nothing is shared; click it to see why.
  3. Make sure ChatGPT is on. With "Allow Shopify to manage for me" switched on, every channel is active.
  4. Run the search preview with a query a buyer would type. AI channels re-rank results, so treat it as a signal (Shopify Help).
  5. Fix weak listings. Shopify's quality score looks at description length, images, verified reviews, variants and store policies.

ChatGPT orders land in your normal orders with their channel or referrer, and the Agentic page reports sales, orders, sessions and conversion rate per AI channel.

To opt out, turn off "Allow Shopify to manage for me" on the same page, click ChatGPT, switch off Shopify Catalog access and save. It can take up to 7 days, and ChatGPT can still find your products by crawling your site. Only the Unlisted status hides a product everywhere, Google included (Shopify Help).

Running your store from ChatGPT

This is the Shopify plugin for ChatGPT, made by Shopify (Shopify Help). It runs on Shopify's Setup MCP server, the same one behind its Claude and Perplexity integrations (Shopify), so if you've read how to hook Claude up to your store, the abilities will look familiar. For a store you own:

AreaWhat it can doRead or write
OrdersList recent orders, 50 at a time, and open one for items, shipping and trackingRead-only
AnalyticsAnswer questions on sales, orders, products, customers and fulfillment, as tables and chartsRead-only
CustomersSearch by name, email, location or tag, with order count and total spendRead-only
ProductsCreate and edit products, set status for up to 50 at once, add photos, sell digital filesWrite
InventoryCheck stock by location, set a quantity with a reasonWrite
Collections and discountsBuild manual or smart collections, create percentage-off codesWrite

Whatever you approve, it can't refund, cancel or capture orders, mark them paid, handle returns or gift cards, edit your live theme, or touch your plan, payments, taxes or domains. Pin Shopify to ChatGPT's sidebar and you get a home screen with your store's recent performance.

Set it up in ChatGPT

  1. In a desktop browser, open ChatGPT, go to Plugins and find Shopify, or go straight to chatgpt.com/plugins/shopify.
  2. Click Install plugin.
  3. ChatGPT sends you to your Shopify admin. Read the access it asks for, then approve it.
  4. Start a chat and type @Shopify before your question, so ChatGPT uses the plugin instead of general knowledge.

Shopify charges nothing extra, and OpenAI bills your ChatGPT plan. Whether your plan, region or workspace can install a given plugin is up to OpenAI (OpenAI Help). The plugin works with one store at a time, and you can switch to another store you own from the chat (Shopify Help).

Other tools: custom MCP servers

For a tool with no plugin, ChatGPT lets you add a remote MCP server under Plugins, "+", then Add custom MCP server. Full support, write actions included, is for Business, Enterprise and Edu, on the web, and on Business only admins can add one. Pro users get read and fetch permissions only (OpenAI Help).

Don't point it at Shopify's own endpoint: Shopify doesn't approve arbitrary clients there (Shopify). And skip third-party Shopify servers that want an admin token pasted in; the risks are laid out here. Developers can use Shopify's AI Toolkit in Codex, Claude Code or Cursor (Shopify.dev), and our Shopify MCP guide sorts out which Shopify server does what.

Sidekick, already in your admin

Sidekick is Shopify's own assistant, included in every plan (Shopify pricing). It reads the page you're on, analyzes data, edits products, and shows each change for your approval first (Shopify Help). If you live in Shopify admin all day, start there.

What to ask once it's connected

Shopify's tip: one short question at a time. Questions that stack several comparisons and filters tend to fail.

  • "@Shopify What were sales by product over the last 30 days?"
  • "@Shopify Which orders from the last 7 days are still unfulfilled?"
  • "@Shopify Who are my 20 biggest customers by total spend?"
  • "@Shopify How many units of the Linen Shirt are left at each location?"
  • "@Shopify Create a 15% code for the Holiday Gifts collection, starting 1 November."

What neither route tells you

The plugin reads what Shopify recorded: orders, customers, sales. It has no tool for your Meta or Google ad accounts, and nothing that shows what a visitor did on the page before leaving. The Agentic page gives you sessions and conversion per AI channel. That tells you how many ChatGPT visitors bought, not why the others didn't.

Where Anry fits

Anry isn't in ChatGPT. It's a read-only MCP server for Claude, Claude Code and Cursor, and it covers the paid side: which Meta or Google ad sends visitors who leave, where they leave, and what each leak costs in your own orders. On the first day of a seven-ad Meta test we ran for anry.io (19 October), the cost per visitor who stayed ranged from A$4.47 on the best ad to A$21.90 on the worst. Meta's dashboard doesn't show that number; it comes from joining each ad to the visit. If you don't run paid ads, the Shopify plugin or Sidekick is all you need.

Is it safe?

Both routes are official. The plugin goes through Shopify's approval screen, can only do what your staff account can do, and Shopify blocks refunds, payments and your live theme whatever you approve. Once your data reaches ChatGPT, Shopify says it's "no longer processed by Shopify" and falls under OpenAI's terms (Shopify Help). To revoke it, uninstall the integration from your Shopify admin. To give it less access, you uninstall and reinstall.

For selling, the risk runs the other way: product data you'd rather not share. Use the ChatGPT toggle, or set products that must stay hidden to Unlisted.

Frequently asked questions

Can customers buy my Shopify products inside ChatGPT?

They find them in ChatGPT and pay on your store's checkout, which opens in ChatGPT's in-app browser on mobile. OpenAI moved away from payment inside the chat in March 2026.

Does selling in ChatGPT cost anything?

Shopify says there are no fees on ChatGPT sales beyond your standard payment processing. Your store needs to be on the Starter plan or higher and sell to US customers.

Is there an official Shopify app for ChatGPT?

Yes, the Shopify plugin for ChatGPT, made by Shopify. You install it from ChatGPT, approve it in your Shopify admin, and pay no extra Shopify fee.

How do I see how much I sell through ChatGPT?

Open Sales channels, then Agentic, in Shopify admin. It reports sales, orders, sessions and conversion rate for each AI channel, and each order carries its channel or referrer.

Can I sell in ChatGPT if my store isn't on Shopify?

Shopify's Agentic plan, listed at $0 a month, puts your products in Shopify Catalog while you keep your own site, and you pay card fees when you sell (Shopify pricing). OpenAI also takes applications from merchants who want to share a product feed directly.
