Why people look for Smartlook alternatives
There's one reason, and it has a date. Cisco, which owns Smartlook, announced its end of life on March 31, 2026 (Cisco). Smartlook's own notice sets the rest (Smartlook):
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| May 31, 2026 | No new subscriptions sold |
| August 31, 2026 | No more renewals or expansions |
| August 31, 2027 | Last day of support. Remaining paid subscriptions end |
| September 30, 2027 | Platform switched off, remaining data deleted |
Cisco points customers to Digital Experience Analytics in Splunk Observability Cloud. But Splunk "will not be migrating any historical data", and your subscription doesn't move over by itself. Once your paid plan ends, you drop to Smartlook's free plan, with its limits, until September 30, 2027.
So there are two jobs. Get your data out, then pick what replaces each part.
What to export before the shutdown
Smartlook says to export before your paid subscription ends, which is August 31, 2027 at the latest.
- Pull the raw data through the API while you're still paying. The REST API covers visitors, events, funnels and sessions. It allows 100 requests an hour on paid plans, 1,000 with the REST API add-on, and 20 on Free (Smartlook API). A big export on the free plan is slow.
- Export your key segments as CSV. The sessions view exports up to 1,000 users per segment (Smartlook help).
- Copy your event and funnel definitions. The API returns them, and they're the first thing you'll rebuild in the new tool.
- Note the recordings that matter. We found no way in Smartlook's docs to download the recordings themselves. Session data from the API carries metadata and links to the Smartlook player, and the player goes away with the platform.
- Or load it all into PostHog. PostHog can import Smartlook's visitors, sessions, events, visitor events and funnels as a data source. It's in alpha, needs a project API token, and big visitor-event imports may need the REST API add-on (PostHog docs).
Which tool replaces which Smartlook feature
| Smartlook feature | For an online store | For an app team |
|---|---|---|
| Session recordings | Anry, Clarity | Clarity, PostHog, LogRocket |
| Events and funnels | PostHog, Clarity | PostHog, UXCam |
| Heatmaps | Clarity, Anry, Mouseflow | Clarity, UXCam |
| Mobile app SDK | Not needed | UXCam, Clarity, PostHog, LogRocket |
| Crash and error reports | LogRocket | LogRocket, PostHog |
The 7 best Smartlook alternatives
1. Anry: for online stores that want the ad, the visit and the order together
Start with the limit: Anry is built for web stores (Shopify, WooCommerce and PrestaShop) and has no mobile app SDK. If Smartlook recorded your app, skip to Clarity, PostHog or UXCam.
For a store, Anry covers what Smartlook was mostly used for. It has session replays and can generate a visual heatmap for a page. Then it adds what Smartlook never did. It follows each Meta or Google ad click to the visit and to the order, shows which page, device or ad is losing sales, and what each of those leaks costs in your store's own orders rather than in what the ad platform reports. Code finds and prices the leaks, the same way every time. A language model only writes the explanation and the suggested fix, and the fix goes to your own agent ("Ask Anry").
Our own site shows why the split matters. On anry.io's /shopify page, iPhone visits recorded no scroll or tap 47% of the time, against 15% on Android (Anry sessions and heatmaps, to October 20, 2026). Watched one by one, those are just empty replays. Split by device, they tell you which phone to test first. For the checks that follow, see why mobile converts worse than desktop.
There is no app to install. You ask in Claude, Claude Code or Cursor, which connect to Anry's remote MCP with an OAuth 2.1 sign-in, and none of its 16 tools can write anything (MCP docs).
- When Anry is the better choice: you run a store, buy traffic on Meta or Google, and used Smartlook to find out why visitors leave.
- Price: one plan with every feature, billed monthly, with a free trial and no card (pricing). It isn't free like Clarity.
- The catch: web stores only, no surveys, and it only judges Meta and Google ads.
2. Microsoft Clarity: the free swap for web and apps
Clarity is the closest like-for-like replacement, at no cost. It records sessions, draws heatmaps and builds funnels from smart events, on websites and in apps. The mobile SDK covers native Android and iOS, React Native and Flutter. Cordova and Ionic work on Android only (Microsoft Learn).
- When Clarity is the better choice: you want Smartlook's core features on web and app without a bill.
- Price: free forever, no traffic limits, no sampling, up to 100,000 sessions per project a day (Microsoft Learn).
- The catch: replays last 30 days (heatmaps 9 months), and its MCP allows 10 requests per project a day over the last 3 days (Microsoft Learn). The iOS SDK doesn't upload sessions recorded offline. More on where Clarity runs out in Microsoft Clarity alternatives.
3. PostHog: for the events and funnels you built
If your team lived in Smartlook's events and funnels, PostHog is the most natural home. Product analytics, web and mobile replays, surveys and feature flags sit in one tool, and it can import your Smartlook data (see the export steps above).
- When PostHog is the better choice: you have a developer, you track custom events, and you want web and app in one place.
- Price: free every month for 1M events, 5,000 web recordings and 2,500 mobile recordings. After that, $0.005 per web recording, falling to $0.0015 at volume, and $0.01 per mobile recording, falling to $0.003. Replays are kept 1 month free, 3 months paid (PostHog, pricing).
- The catch: it's built for software teams, so expect setup. Its MCP is free to connect but can also write, including feature flags and experiments (PostHog).
4. LogRocket: replays with the errors behind them
For teams that used Smartlook to chase bugs and crashes. LogRocket ties each replay to errors and logs, and counts web and mobile sessions on one bill, with SDKs for iOS, Android, React Native and Flutter (LogRocket docs).
- When LogRocket is the better choice: engineers are the main users, and debugging matters more than marketing.
- Price: its pricing calculator starts with a free tier at 1,000 sessions a month. Core is $83 a month for 10,000 sessions and $176 for 25,000, billed yearly, with heatmaps, funnels, surveys and MCP/API access included. AI summaries need Pro. 14-day trial (LogRocket pricing).
- The catch: seats, retention and add-ons change the final price, so read the calculator as a floor.
5. UXCam: for teams whose product is the app
UXCam started on mobile and covers the widest set of app frameworks in this list: iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter, Cordova, Xamarin and NativeScript, plus a web snippet (UXCam). It has replays, heatmaps for taps and gestures, funnels, and an AI analyst called Tara that reviews sessions for you.
- When UXCam is the better choice: Smartlook mainly recorded your iOS or Android app, especially one built on Xamarin, Cordova or NativeScript.
- Price: based on monthly sessions and quoted on request, with a 14-day free trial (UXCam pricing).
- The catch: no public prices. Its MCP server is a beta helper that adds the SDK to your app. It doesn't read your analytics (UXCam docs).
6. Fullstory: a year of replays on the free plan
FullstoryFree gives 30,000 sessions a month with 12 months of replay and analytics retention, for up to 10 users, with no card (Fullstory).
- When Fullstory is the better choice: you want long web replay history without paying, or a bigger team that will grow into a paid plan.
- Price: free as above. Business, Advanced and Enterprise are priced on request (Fullstory pricing).
- The catch: recording mobile apps is a paid add-on, and the MCP, StoryAI and dashboards are paid-plan features (Fullstory MCP).
7. Mouseflow: web heatmaps, funnels and forms
Mouseflow is for websites, and strong on what Smartlook did there: replays, several heatmap types, funnels and form analytics (Mouseflow pricing). We found no native app SDK.
- When Mouseflow is the better choice: your Smartlook project was a website, and forms or checkout steps are where people drop.
- Price: free for 500 sessions a month (1 month of data). Essential $25 (5,000 sessions, 3 months), Advanced $109 (25,000, 6 months), Premium $319 (100,000, 12 months), up to 35% off yearly. 14-day trial, no card.
- The catch: the MCP needs Premium, and form analytics start on Essential.
When Smartlook is still the better choice
For a while, it is. On a paid contract it keeps running until August 31, 2027, so nothing forces a move this month. Use that time for the export, while you still have paid API limits. And if your company already pays for Splunk Observability Cloud, Cisco's successor (Digital Experience Analytics, with session replay, funnels and journey maps) may be the simplest path (Splunk). Plan to start it empty, because no history moves over.
How to choose
- Shopify, WooCommerce or PrestaShop store buying ads: Anry, with Clarity running alongside for free.
- App team with no budget: Clarity's mobile SDK.
- App team that needs product analytics: PostHog, which can also take in your old Smartlook data.
- App-first company on Xamarin, Cordova or NativeScript: UXCam.
- Engineers chasing bugs: LogRocket.
- Website with forms to fix: Mouseflow. For a store, our Shopify heatmap tools comparison goes deeper.
- Torn between the two free web defaults: we put them side by side in Hotjar vs Microsoft Clarity. Hotjar itself now sends new users to Contentsquare, so the Hotjar alternatives are worth a look too.
Where Anry fits
If Smartlook was recording a store's website, Anry replaces its replays and heatmaps and answers what they couldn't: which ad sent the visitors who left, and what that leak costs in your own orders. The fix goes to your agent. If Smartlook was recording an app, or you don't buy traffic, you don't need Anry. Clarity or PostHog will cover you.
Frequently asked questions
Is Smartlook shutting down?
Yes. Cisco stopped selling it on May 31, 2026, and renewals ended on August 31, 2026. Paid subscriptions end on August 31, 2027, and the platform is switched off on September 30, 2027.
What happens to my Smartlook data?
It's deleted when the platform shuts down on September 30, 2027. Splunk won't migrate history to its successor product, so export what you want to keep before your paid plan ends.
Can I export my Smartlook recordings?
You can export visitors, events, funnels and session metadata through the REST API, and segments of up to 1,000 users as CSV. We found no documented way to download the recordings themselves.
What's the cheapest Smartlook alternative?
Microsoft Clarity. It's free with no traffic limit, on websites and in apps. PostHog, LogRocket, Fullstory and Mouseflow have free tiers too, from 500 sessions a month (Mouseflow) to 30,000 (Fullstory).
What's the best Smartlook alternative for mobile apps?
Clarity if it has to be free, PostHog if you also need events and funnels, and UXCam if you want an app-first tool with the most frameworks covered. Anry doesn't record apps.
Is Smartlook worth it in 2026?
Not for anyone new, because it stopped selling on May 31, 2026. Existing customers can use it until their paid plan ends, August 31, 2027 at the latest.
